Pastor criminalised for praying in public
Precious Life is deeply saddened and gravely concerned by the court ruling against Pastor Clive Johnston, a man acknowledged by the court itself as being “of strong religious belief and good character”- yet one who has now been criminalsied for peacefully expressing his Christian faith in public.
The court heard that Pastor Johnston’s actions took place within a so called “abortion safe zone,” even though abortion was neither mentioned nor alluded to in any manner. This raises deeply troubling questions about the increasing intolerance toward public expressions of Christian belief and the wider implications for civil and religious liberty in Northern Ireland.
Freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and freedom of expression are fundamental human rights. They do not originate from the state, nor should they be subject to political convenience or ideological pressure.
This ruling represents a deeply worrying development and sets a dangerous precedent for all those who value democratic freedoms. When peaceful religious expression can be punished in this way, the rights of all citizens are placed at risk.
In 2024, a mother-of-four was convicted for praying outside an abortion Centre. She is still bravely challenging her conviction through the Appeals Court [See: Mother convicted for praying outside abortion centre]
Precious Life stands in solidarity with Pastor Clive Johnston and with all those committed to defending the fundamental rights and freedoms that form the foundation of a free and democratic society.
