Spokesman Tomás Ó Caomhánaigh said that the Guide was written in response to requests from ‘so many Catholics for factual and reliable information about Lisbon and about the Charter of Rights attached to the Treaty’. ‘We’re seeing politicians, from both the opposition and government, being extraordinarily dishonest in denying that the Treaty and the Charter could impact hugely on our abortion laws and on other important social issues such as same-sex marriage’, said the Cóir spokesman. ‘Our Guide sets the facts out for the voter.’ He said the Guide was available to everyone free of charge by calling 01 8746858. Meanwhile, leading independent commentator Dr. Anthony Coughlan, has criticised Minister Dick Roche for failing to ‘give the full picture’ when writing that Ireland’s Maastricht Protocol on the right to life of the unborn would continue to be protected under the Lisbon Treaty. Dr Coughlan pointed out that the Lisbon Treaty would, for the first time, give the EU Court of Justice the power to define the right to life, as well as many other human and civil rights, for all EU citizens if it should come into force. The Lisbon Treaty would do this by making the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights legally binding in all areas of EU law on all 27 member states including Ireland.
