For the first time in Irish political history the electorate will have a Voters' Guide available to them, produced by an independent body asking for key pro-life and pro-family issues to be given priority when voting.
Cóir's Voters' Guide will be used to assist voters in "using their votes, to protect their values".
It points out that "we all share many of the same concerns, for example, on the economy, jobs, schools and crime." "However," it goes on, "the following four issues are of special importance to many Irish people - but the opinion of the majority is all too often brushed aside'. The Guide then spells out those four issues: 1. LIFE: the protection of human life from conception to natural death. That means saying NO to abortion, embryo research and euthanasia, which destroy human life. 2. FAMILY: the family based on the marriage protects and strengthens children and society. Anti-family policies such as same-sex adoption, or tax-individualisation (which punishes families where a mother or father cares for the children in the home), should be scrapped. 3. RIGHT TO A JUST WAGE: the right of every person to earn a living wage. That means supporting policies that protect a just wage, while tackling the causes of poverty. 4. PROTECTING THE IRISH CONSTITUTION: When we rejected the Lisbon Treaty last year, we did so because we wanted to retain the right to make our own laws. Lisbon would have meant more than economic co-operation, it would have brought a new European constitution for Ireland. Our NO vote must be respected and our Irish Constitution protected. The Guide also explains that it is party policy that matters most. It says: "When politicians come knocking at your door, ask them what the policy of their party is on these key issues. It is the policy of the party that matters, since politicians are slow to go against their party. Obviously, for Independent candidates in the election, it is their own personal policies that count." The Guides are now being widely distributed. To assist in ensuring they are available to as many people as possible please call Dublin 01 8746858. DOWNLOAD THE VOTERS' GUIDE...
