12 / 12 / 2008 - Cork meeting hears that UCC proposal is `assault on Irelands pro-life ethos`
A packed meeting in the Imperial Hotel in Cork on Tuesday head that UCC’s proposal to experiment on human embryonic stem cell lines “was an assault on Ireland’s pro-life ethos” and that it was “the moral equivalent to opening an abortion clinic in Cork.” Eoghan de Faoite of Youth Defence said that the governing body of UCC and the government needed to hear public anger at this deplorable, unethical and illegal decision.

Dr Dónal Ó Mathúna, Lecturer in Health Care Ethics in DCU, addressed the meeting, making clear the issues surrounding the stem cell debate so that all at the meeting would be well informed to explain the topic in the future.

Attendees were also shown eight short-listed billboards for YD’s upcoming campaign and asked to mark their preference in terms of message and presentation. The campaign will have four separate but related facets tackling the push for embryo research in UCC, and will focus on public information and awareness, raising student opposition, and hosting an international seminar opposing the research proposal in UCC next February. The billboards are critical to raise necessary public awareness of the UCC proposal to experiment on human embryonic stem cell lines.

Calling for a huge, sustained effort on the crisis, Mr de Faoite said that the pro-life response urgently needed to engage the general public, and YD’s campaign would be crucial to raising public awareness and blocking this research from going ahead. “The response in Cork from the pro-life movement needs to be strong and unified,” he said.
