24 / 04 / 2008 - UK `celebrities` announce their support for killing unborn babies
A group of celebrities have publicly announced their support for the killing of unborn babies up to 24 weeks. They are : comedian Jo Brand;   writer and presenter Beverley Turner;   former 'Blue Peter' presenter Janet Ellis;   journalist and broadcaster Polly Toynbee;   writer and broadcaster Miriam Stoppard;   broadcaster and journalist David Aaronovitch.

They are supporting a pro-abortion campaign launched by the Family Planning Association (FPA) to oppose a reduction in the legal time limit for abortion.

It is expected MPs will vote on cutting the 24-week limit - possibly to 20 weeks - in an amendment to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill.

It would be the first time politicians have had a chance to vote to change the limit since 1990.

MPs will table amendments to the bill when it is next before parliament, probably at the end of May.

The 20-week amendment is likely to be tabled by Nadine Dorries MP, a former nurse, and there is talk of other MPs tabling amendments proposing lower limits.

They are being supported by Alive and Kicking, an umbrella group of pro-life organisations.

Julia Millington, the group's spokeswoman, said they wanted to see the time limit reduced to as low as possible.

"We will support any amendments to the bill which will help us reach our short-term objective of halving the number of abortions in this country."

However, a group of pro-abortion MPs, headed by Lib Dem Evan Harris, is seeking to keep the limit at 24 weeks. They have received support from the FPA and the pro-abortion celebrities.

The pro-abortion MPs are also expected to put forward a proposal to make the killing of unborn children even easier by scrapping the need for two doctors to agree to an abortion; allowing nurses to carry them out; and extending this law to Northern Ireland.
