I met the Cardinal in Knock, Co. Mayo, where he addressed a pro-life conference. In a powerful speech he said we must not be afraid to stand up and defend the inviolability of all human life from the moment of conception until natural death. He spoke to the large crowd about the need to be witnesses to life in today’s world. "..There is nothing more important, nothing more fundamental than to give witness in this battle for our unborn.." said the Cardinal. Hearing his words, I felt so proud of Precious Life's volunteers who continue to give witness in the battle for the unborn despite the recent hostility and persecution we have endured. He said our pro-life work is "..close to God's heart" and he encouraged us never to become discouraged as we protect our unborn brothers and sisters. "..It is a long term struggle. We must never be come discouraged or grow tired.." he said. The Cardinal reiterated the call of Pope John Paul II that we must engage in this battle in the public square - "..Yes we face a struggle against powerful forces but we remain steadfast even in the face of indifference and hostility" BE CONFIDENT Cardinal Burke explained that the 'culture of death' cannot succeed. He told us, "..Be confident! The culture of life will prevail. We must do all in our power to hasten the victory of the culture of life. We have the sure hope of the victory. Christ said He would be with us until the end of time." He emphasised that Christians are "called to be light". He said the innocent victims of abortion are depending on us - "..We are called to be light, and be co-workers for God in this apostolate for life. Our faith will provide us with everything we need for the daily battle.." The Cardinal also spoke strongly about the role of politicians, and in particular Catholic politicians; that they must not sacrifice the protection of human life to political expediency. I came away from my meeting with Cardinal Burke feeling so encouraged and inspired by this powerful champion for the unborn. Bernadette Smyth Director Precious Life |
