PR: Precious Life call on people of Derry to ‘take back their vote’ for pro-abortion Colum Eastwood MP

Precious Life have called on the people of Derry to ‘take back their vote’ for SDLP leader and recently elected MP, Colum Eastwood. Calls from the pro-life organisation come ahead of region-wide ‘Life Chains’ taking place this weekend.

On 17 June, Mr Eastwood used his position as an MP at Westminster to vote in favour of imposing abortion up to birth in Northern Ireland – despite overwhelming public opposition to the ferocious abortion law.

Bernadette Smyth of Precious Life called on Mr Eastwood to step down as an MP and urged people in his constituency to ‘take back their vote’ for the Derry-based politician.

“Given that Mr Eastwood’s manifesto gave no indication of his pro-abortion stance, we are calling for Mr Eastwood to stand down as an MP and trigger a by-election in Derry,” she said.

“It is now clear to see that his constituents have been deceived. Time and time again, Colum Eastwood assured voters that the SDLP were a pro-life party, despite using his power as party leader and MP to push abortion up to birth on defenceless unborn children in Northern Ireland.  He has made a mockery of devolution and expressed total contempt for the 79% of public respondents to the NIO Consultation who rejected the introduction of any form of legal abortion here.”

“The people of Derry now deserve the opportunity to replace him in light of the fact that his extreme pro-abortion views have been made clear for all to see,” she added.

Ms Smyth said that Precious Life will continue to expose the actions of Colum Eastwood MP and hold him accountable.

“Many constituents have been shamelessly lied to and misled by Colum Eastwood MP, who assured them that the SDLP held pro-life convictions.  Many people voted for him on the basis that the SDLP would endeavour to protect life. They could not have anticipated that their vote would be used to help introduce Europe’s most extreme abortion regime, allowing babies to be killed on demand and without restriction.

“Precious Life will continue to highlight Colum Eastwood’s duplicity and make people aware of exactly what he voted for last month – the deliberate and state-sanctioned killing of defenceless unborn babies, on demand and right through to the point of birth in Northern Ireland,” she said.

Ms Smyth’s comments come as hundreds of people prepare to take part in small-scale, socially distanced Life Chains across Ireland, including an event in Derry, as part of the All Ireland Rally for Life’s ‘Life Fest’.

“In collaboration with the All Ireland Rally for Life, Precious Life have organised various region-wide Life Chains this Saturday 4 July, including a demonstration in Derry City.

“The message this weekend will be clear – we stand united for life with thousands across Ireland, and abortion is not in our name.  At the Derry event, people will gather to highlight that they do not support Mr Eastwood’s horrific abortion agenda, and they demand that both mothers and babies are protected across Ireland,” Ms Smyth concluded.
