Abortion Leading Cause of Death in 2019 with over 42 Million Killed

There were 42.4 million abortions performed in the course of the year, making abortion the number one cause of human death worldwide in 2019, with more than 42 million children killed before birth. This figure is according to the statistics tracking service, Worldometers. Worldometers tracks and estimates statistics on a wide variety of subjects, based on data from sources such as the United Nations and World Health Organisation (hereinafter WHO). It has been recognised and endorsed by the American Library Association (ALA).

Worldometers calculates the abortion numbers based on the latest statistics published by WHO. As of December 31st, according to the tracking service, there were 42.4 million abortions in 2019. This is half a million MORE abortions than in 2018. Abortion was also the leading cause of death worldwide in 2018.

In the South of Ireland alone, following the horrific legislation introduced at the beginning of 2019, the number of abortions more than TRIPLED over the course of the year.

According to WHO, every year in the world there are an estimated 40-50 million induced abortions (as opposed to miscarriages). This corresponds to approximately 125,000 abortions every day. The 42.4 million deaths from abortion in 2019 was more than twice the number of all worldwide deaths caused by cancer, smoking, alcohol, traffic accidents, malaria and HIV/AIDS combined.

Each of those 42.4 million abortions represents a living, unrepeatable human being. Abortion was the leading cause of death in 2019. Today, at the start of 2020, let's all recommit to making abortion not only illegal but unthinkable. This year, let’s continue the fight to repeal section 9 in the North of Ireland!

As of January 2, Worldometers’ abortion page estimates there have already been more than 175,000 abortions globally in 2020.
