STATEMENT TO MEDIA 

Northern Ireland’s leading pro-life group Precious Life has announced plans to hold a public protest outside Belfast City Hall if proposals to illuminate the historic building in celebration of abortion are approved.

The proposal to illuminate Belfast City Hall to celebrate so-called “safe abortion day” was voted through at a Council Committee Meeting by Sinn Féin, SDLP, Alliance Party and Green Party. The display is currently scheduled for Monday 28th September, but the proposal must first be ratified by Belfast City Council at a full Council meeting on Tuesday 1st September.

Director of Precious Life, Bernadette Smyth, said, “Belfast City Hall is not a billboard for abortion. Public resources and ratepayers’ money must not be used to promote and celebrate the killing of unborn babies. We have launched an Action Alert calling on people to contact the Council and urge them to stop this proposal when it comes before the full Council meeting on Tuesday 1st September.”

She added, “Abortion is never ‘safe’ because of the physical harm and psychological damage it causes women, and most definitely never 'safe' for the baby who is killed in every abortion.

“If this diabolical celebration of abortion goes ahead, Precious Life will hold a public protest outside Belfast City Hall on the day of the illuminations to expose the horrific reality of abortion.”

Bernadette Smyth concluded, “This plan to light up Belfast City Hall to celebrate abortion is NOT IN OUR NAME. Abortion is not something to celebrate. Every unborn child is a precious human life worthy of protection.”
