Precious Life welcome scrapping of Two-Child Benefit Cap

Precious Life welcomes Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ decision to scrap the two-child benefit cap, recognising it as an important step towards greater economic justice for families and children who have been unfairly impacted by this policy.

In a stetement to the media, Director of Precious Life Bernadette Smyth, said:

“This cap placed disproportionate pressure on low-income and working families, effectively penalising children because of circumstances entirely beyond their control. It embedded inequality into the welfare system by creating a hierarchy of worth, where some children received support while others were denied it simply because of their birth order.

Economic hardship is one of the greatest drivers of family crisis. When parents face rising living costs, job insecurity or unexpected trauma, removing essential financial support only deepens poverty and despair. By lifting this restriction, the Government acknowledges that genuine economic justice must prioritise the wellbeing of children and provide families with the stability they need to survive and thrive.

We particularly welcome Chancellor Reeves’ recognition that families experience hardship for many reasons, including bereavement, illness and unemployment, and that children should not bear the consequences of such challenges.

This decision sends a clear signal that social policy should protect the vulnerable, not punish them. Every child matters, regardless of birth order or background. We urge the Government to continue developing policies that truly support parents in crisis, reduce child poverty, and offer practical alternatives to abortion by removing financial pressures that drive fear and desperation.

Precious Life will continue to advocate for a culture where families are supported, mothers are protected, and every child is valued.”
