Are Gen Z aborting half of all pregnancies?

Published by Kevin Duffy

I was recently asked to verify my claim made in an earlier post that “half of all Generation Z pregnancies now end in abortion.”

The most recent set of cohort fertility data was published by the Office for National Statistics in July 2025, showing conceptions, maternities, and abortions data for different age-groupings, over the years 2012 to 2022.[i] [ii]

Gen Z are generally considered to have been born in the years 1997 through 2012—this means that in 2022, the oldest Gen Z would have been 25.

The ONS data shows that in 2022, for all women aged up to 25, there were

  • 190,970 conceptions, from which there were
  • 100,217 births and
  • 90,753 abortions.

This means that in 2022, for Gen Z women, 48% of all viable pregnancies ended in abortion.[iii]

[ii] The ONS explains that it uses the term ‘conceptions’ to count viable pregnancies that lead to either a birth or an abortion. The ONS uses the term ‘maternities’ to collate data for pregnancies that result in either a live birth or a stillbirth.
