Few would have envisaged the colossal rate of abortions that would stem from UK Abortion Act

THE head of one of Northern Irelands leading Pro-Life charities has lamented the loss of almost 10 Million children who have been killed since the UK Abortion Act received royal assent on 27th October 1967.

Head of Precious Life, Bernadette Smyth has voiced her bitter disappointment at the slaughter of innocent children that still continues unabated today and says when the Act became law 54 years ago, few envisaged the colossal rate of abortions that would stem from it.

The Bill was introduced by Lord David Steel as a Private Member's Bill and was backed by the government, who appointed the president of the Royal College of Obstetricias and Gynaecologists, Sir John Peel, to chair a medical advisory committee that reported in favour of passing the bill

Describing the horror, Mrs Smyth said: “Abortion has decimated this generation. The figures are a poor indictment on us as a society and we will remember each one of these nine million babies. Each one is a unique, precious and irreplaceable human being.”

“In 1968, the year the Act came into effect, there were 23,641 abortions in England and Wales. This rose to 54,819 the next year. Today we remember every single baby whose life has been violently ended by the abortion industry.

“Today we remember every single baby whose life has been violently ended by the abortion industry. The figures are a poor indictment on us as a society and we will remember each one of these nine million babies, who is a unique and irreplaceable human being.

“Since October 27th 1967, almost ten million children have been killed by abortion in Great Britain. It is inconceivable that the number of abortions would have increased to such an alarming level.

“Today one in every four pregnancies end in abortion. It is a very dark day indeed when we learn that abortions in England and Wales have increased by almost 300 per cent since 1969. And since 2019, 99 per cent of all abortions in the UK are now paid for by the taxpayer.

Mrs Smyth added: “Furthermore, due to the lack of independent counselling at abortion centres women are making the choice to have an abortion rather than continue with their pregnancy.”

“Many women however, have a change of heart during this critical and uncertain time and choose life for their baby, if the right help can be accessed.

Mrs Smyth concluded: "This anniversary provides an opportunity to lament the loss of life due to abortion and seek a change of heart over the child in the womb and the care of mothers who are pregnant. Every abortion is a tragedy. We need to bring about a new debate to change attitudes towards human life in the womb, to promote what it means to protect, nurture and care for mothers and their children."
