Hundreds of pro-life people from across Northern Ireland gathered at Belfast City Hall for Precious Life’s “LIFE CHAIN” on Saturday 23rd October.

We organised the event to mark the second anniversary of Westminster overriding the Northern Ireland Assembly to legalise abortion.

The Life Chain circled the entire city hall, with people holding banners and signs stating ‘Every Child deserves a BIRTH day’.

The pro-life message was seen by thousands of people as they walked or drove along this busy area of Belfast.

It was on 21st October 2019, while Stormont was suspended, that abortion was forced on Northern Ireland by the Westminster Parliament through Section 9 of their NI Executive Formation Act. Their abortion regulations came into force in March the following year, and since then over 1556 babies have been killed by abortion.

At the gates of the City Hall, we also had a poignant display of hundreds of baby shoes – each with a boy or girl's name attached – arranged to form the number 1 5 5 6

Speaking to the assembled crowd afterwards, Director of Precious Life Bernadette Smyth said,

"Today we gather to mark the second anniversary of abortion being forced on Northern Ireland.

It's hard to believe that it's been two years since the pro-abortion MLAs in the Stormont Assembly allowed the Westminster Parliament to force abortion on us on 21st October 2019.

Sadly, Northern Ireland now has one of the most cruel and horrific abortion regimes in the world, going beyond even Britain’s atrocious 1967 Abortion Act or the abortion legislation enacted in the Republic of Ireland.

Now two years later, more than 1,556 precious little babies have been murdered by abortion.

This exposes the hypocrisy of the Government and pro-abortion MLAs in the Stormont Assembly who claim they care about the people here, yet they ignore and turn their backs on the most vulnerable of all - our unborn babies.

But we won’t turn our backs on our most vulnerable babies. We will bring the horror that was inflicted on those 1556 children to the forefront of public attention. We will never give up, because tiny, helpless little babies are relying on us.

I can assure you that the fight to protect our unborn children is not over.

Precious Life’s REPEAL SECTION 9 CAMPAIGN will continue until our MLAs at Stormont pass new legislation to repeal Westminster’s abortion law.

Our work will never be over until protection and personhood is restored for every unborn child in Northern Ireland.

Each pair of baby shoes in our display represents an innocent life cruelly taken by the injustice of the abortion legislation that was forced on Northern Ireland by the Westminster government.

Every child deserves a chance to take their first steps ...every child deserves to wear his or her first pair of shoes ...and most importantly, every child deserves a Birth day."

Bernadette concluded, "Our unborn children must be protected in law, policy and practice.  In only 7 months from now - May 2022 - we will once again elect MLAs to the Northern Ireland Assembly. It is vital that we 'kick out' the pro-abortion MLAs and elect only those candidates who promise to repeal Section 9 and restore protection and personhood status for babies in the womb."
