Make a Donation Rally for Life - Belfast 18/10/2008 ![]() Thousands of pro-life supporters attended the Rally for Life at Stormont in Belfast on Saturday 18th October 2008 to show their opposition to the extension of the 1967 Abortion Act to Northern Ireland.
A convoy of coaches and buses wheeled in through the gates of Stormont carrying people from all across Northern Ireland to the Rally. Undaunted by the heavy rain, the enthusiastic crowd cheered as our local MPs and Assembly Members, and represenatives of local, national and international pro-life groups pledged to stop abortion being forced on Northern Ireland. The day before the Rally, the Catholic Bishops of Northern Ireland, and the Protestant Orange Order, had both issued statements opposing the extension of the 1967 Abortion Act to Northern Ireland
Thousands of people from the different traditions in Northern Ireland stood united at this historic rally to hear our local politicians re-iterate the cross-party opposition to the extension of the Abortion Act. The Rally for Life gave the people of Northern Ireland a unique opportunity to send out the clear message to Westminster that we do not want the 1967 Abortion Act imposed on us from Westminster. While it was a colourful affair, with balloons, flags, banners and music, the speakers sounded a deadly serious note when they warned that the “need to stand in defence of Life has never been greater.” This Wednesday (22nd October) - exactly one year after the Northern Assembly voted against abortion - Westminster MPs could vote to force abortion on Northern Ireland. A DVD of the Rally for Life is now in production and will be delivered to all Westminster MPs on Tuesday 21st October. Precious Life call on all Westminster MPs to acknowledge the clear pro-life message being sent out from the politicians, the churches, and the people in Northern Ireland. We urge all MPs in Westminster to vote against the amendment to extend the 1967 Abortion Act to Northern Ireland. We appeal to all MPs in Westminster to respect the democratic process in Northern Ireland and leave any legislation on abortion to be dealt with by our Assembly. |
