The archbishop made his comments on abortion during his March 5 television program, “Keys to a Better World.” Lawmakers in Argentina are currently debating whether or not to legalize the procedure. The archbishop warned against the use of “ambiguous terminology” that describes abortion as “the termination of a pregnancy,” in an attempt to hide the true nature and gravity of the act. “Perhaps this linguistic phenomenon is a symptom of guilty consciences but no words can change the reality of things. Abortion, no matter how it is carried out, is the deliberate and direct elimination of a human being in the initial phase of his existence, which goes from conception to birth,” he explained. Archbishop Aguer also emphasized that Christians must both expose truth, but also “identify and refute error.” He added, “For this reason, when we speak about human life we must also think of how the authentic meaning of human life has been eclipsed.” The bishop noted that during 2011 – which has been declared the Year for Life by Argentina’s bishops – Catholics must speak out against abortion, euthanasia, malnutrition, poor working conditions and “so many other terrible circumstances that threaten life or jeopardize the human person.” Source: EWTN News |
