Precious Life say the Rally showed that "Ireland is the light of the world" in the global battle against abortion. Just after 2pm on Saturday, an enormous cheer went up from the Rally as thousands of people, of all ages, set off from Custom House Square through the busy city centre in a colourful and lively pro-life march. Belfast came to a standstill as streets had to be closed to traffic by the police to accommodate the massive crowd and the rally participants took full advantage by dancing and singing as they walked through the city centre. The colour, music and the enthusiasm of the crowd grabbed the attention of Belfast on a busy Saturday afternoon. On the return to Custom House Square, the huge crowd cheered speakers from Ireland, England and the US, who urged them to be active on pro-life issues. The crowd heard powerful pro-life speeches from Director of Precious Life, Bernadette Smyth; Niamh Uí Bhriain from Life Institute in Dublin; Rev George Hargreaves from the Christian Party in London, and Fr Sylvester Mann representing Priests for Life in Ireland. Speaking to the media after the Rally, Bernadette Smyth said, "I am thrilled with how the day went. It was so exhilarating to see such a massive, colourful pro-life display. There was a jubilant atmosphere as thousands walked in the glorious sunshine with balloons, flags, banners and music to celebrate life. This was one of the largest pro-life rallies that Ireland has ever seen. We sent out a clear message to the world that we will continue working and praying, not only to keep abortion illegal, but make abortion unthinkable." Bernadette Smyth concluded, "The Rally for Life has given another huge boost to the pro-life cause in Ireland. We are proud to proclaim that - at a time when abortion has become the norm in so many other countries around the world - Ireland still protects and cherishes her unborn children. We showed that Ireland is the 'light of the world' in the global battle against abortion." ![]() ![]() |
