Precious Life said the results from the abortion group’s online survey were completely false and did not represent the views of the Irish People.
The internet poll was undertaken December 3-8, 2009 by YouGov Plc. at the behest of Marie Stopes International. The total sample size was 1002 adults. According to Marie Stopes International the results showed “growing support for abortion in Ireland." In a radio interview, Director of Precious Life Bernadette Smyth said, “Marie Stopes International has issued press releases to the world’s media boasting the results of their poll showed growing support for abortion in Ireland. This is a completely false. The views of 1002 people can not represent the views of the entire population.” “We must always be wary of opinion polls. Bear in mind that Marie Stopes paid for this internet opinion poll. And they have provided no proof that those polled were even from Ireland.” “Marie Stopes International claim their research “suggests that the majority of men and women from Ireland agree that abortion should be permitted in Ireland”. They base this on their result which found approximately nine out 10 respondents (87%) agreed that termination of pregnancy should be permitted if the pregnancy seriously endangers the woman’s life” “It must first be noted that abortion is never medically necessary to save a woman’s life. This is a classic tactic of the pro-abortion industry that tries to cause confusion by saying legitimate medical treatment to save a mothers life (which may result in the unintentional death of the unborn child) is abortion. This is NOT true. Doctors in Ireland can carry out every medical treatment to save a woman’s life without resorting to abortion.” “Secondly, it is important to note that their results are based only on the answers of those people polled. For example “nine out 10 respondents (87%)” means exactly that – nine out of 10 people who responded to the poll ...NOT nine out of ten of the entire Irish people.” “1002 people were questioned in the poll. 87% of 1002 is approximately 872. So the views of 872 people are not representative of the views of a population of over 4 million. Yet Marie Stopes International is claiming “growing support for abortion in Ireland” based on the alleged views of 0.02% of the entire population.” Hypocrisy Mrs Smyth added “The sheer hypocrisy of Marie Stopes International is exposed when you consider they are currently conducting another online poll on their own Irish website asking “Should abortion be legal in Ireland?” On the same day Marie Stopes are claiming one of their polls shows support for abortion in Ireland, they’re ignoring their other poll showing 82% have voted NO. Why are Marie Stopes not issuing press releases stating that that 82% of Irish people don’t want abortion legalised? Do they only issue poll results when it suits them?” Bernadette Smyth concluded “All this brings to mind the old cliché of “Lies, damn lies and statistics!”. The Irish people will see through Marie Stopes’ attempt to use the persuasive power of number and percentages to bolster their weak arguments. The Irish People will never accept the killing of our unborn children.” LATEST: On Friday 12th March, Marie Stopes removed the poll from their website after the NO vote had shot up to a massive 94%. No doubt they couldn’t cope with this massive life-affirming vote. They didn’t issue any press releases announcing that 94% of Irish people say abortion should not be legal in Ireland. Marie Stopes International simply wiped out the result. Hardly surprising when you consider their business is “wiping out” little babies!
