11 / 12 / 2009 - Precious Life hold protest against abortion at Belfast hospital and offices of Royal College of Midwives

Precious Life staged a demonstration outside the Royal Jubilee Maternity Hospital in Belfast today (Friday 11 December). We were protesting against abortions which are carried out in the hospital. We plan to stage similar protests at other Northern Ireland hospitals in the New Year.

The protests follow the release of official figures from the Department of Health in November which revealed that 92 abortions were carried out in Northern Ireland during 2008. Precious Life have called for the circumstances behind the abortions to be opened to public scrutiny and investigated by the police.

In a statement to the media, Director of the Precious Life Bernadette Smyth said, “Abortion is illegal in Northern Ireland. It is a very serious offence to cause the death of an unborn child. The only defence medical staff have is to prove the death of the child occurred as an unintentional result of providing life saving treatment to the mother.”

“We have evidence that unborn babies are being intentionally killed by abortion in the Royal Jubilee Maternity Hospital simply because they may be disabled. We held this protest today to expose this illegal practice.”

After the hour long protest, we moved our demonstration to the Belfast office of the Royal College of Midwives (RCM)

Car after car at the busy junction of Howard Street and Great Victoria Street "honked their horns" in support of us.

In a first for Northern Ireland, Precious Life took the pro-life message to a higher level when we used one of the popular Belfast open-top sight-seeing buses to promote our message. Thousands of people from all over the island of Ireland who were in Belfast for Christmas shopping were able to 'see the sight' of our message - "Life is Precious".

The Royal College of Midwives is one of the main Trade Union organisations behind moves to have abortion legalised in Northern Ireland. Secretary of the RCM, Breedagh Hughes has even admitted to carrying out illegal abortions in Northern Ireland. Our protest today exposed to the public this organisation that claims to care for pregnant women but actually supports the killing of unborn children.

Precious Life will continue to be a voice for unborn children when and where ever their lives are in danger. We are planning more ‘flying picket’ style protests in 2010 with our new "Justice for the Unborn" Campaign . Today's demonstration at the Royal has sent out a clear message to any other hospitals in Northern Ireland carrying out abortions that we will expose their illegal activities.
