Ireland Assembly vote against abortion A pro-life motion against abortion was passed in the Northern Ireland Assembly on Monday 22nd October 2007.
The motion was in opposition to draft guidelines on abortion which were issued by the Department of Health in January. Precious Life were instrumental in getting the motion tabled after we held a series of meeting throughout the summer with MPs and Assembly Members, warning them that guidelines would change how the law on abortion is interpreted and effectively legalise abortion in Northern Ireland `through the back door.` In September, the DUP`s Jeffrey Donaldson and Iris Robinson agreed to table the motion in the Assembly. Before the debate, Precious Life made a presentation of 120,000 petitions against abortion signed by the Northern Ireland public. The petitions were accepted by Jeffrey Donaldson MP and Iris Robinson MP on behalf of the First Minister, Rev Ian Paisley. The motion passed by the Assembly was: "That this Assembly opposes the introduction of the proposed guidelines on the termination of pregnancy in Northern Ireland; believes that the guidelines are flawed; and calls on the Minister of Health, Social Services and Public Safety to abandon any attempt to make abortion more widely available in Northern Ireland." Our petitions were signed by thousands of people from all across the community in Northern Ireland. The pro-life motion received cross-party support. Our Assembly Members – catholic and protestant, unionist and nationalist – represented the people of Northern Ireland by coming together to unite in their opposition to abortion. We are overjoyed that our Assembly members voted in support of the motion. This was a victory for our unborn children. Together with our 120,000 petitions, the passing of this motion has sent out a clear, unanimous message to the Department of Health, the Government in Westminster, and indeed to the world, that the people of Northern Ireland demand nothing less than the protection for our unborn babies and their mothers from abortion. If you haven`t already done so, you might like to send a quick email to Jeffrey Donaldson and Iris Robinson, to thank them for putting the pro-life motion before the N. Ireland Assembly.
