09 / 10 / 2009 - Pro-Life Advocates Mark 20 Years Since UN Convention on the Rights of the Child
by reason of his physical and mental immaturity,

BEFORE as well as after birth.”
The 20th anniversary of the United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child is taking place in Geneva, Switzerland this week and pro-life advocates are participating. They hope to direct attention to the rights of the unborn child and the pro-life language in the document.
The 1989 United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child is a comprehensive document to advance the cause and protection of all children throughout the world.
The document quotes the 1959 Declaration of the Rights of the Child, which says in part: “The child, by reason of his physical and mental immaturity, needs special safeguards and care, including appropriate legal protection, before as well as after birth.”
Article 6 of the document calls on nations to "recognize that every child has the inherent right to life.”
Scott Fischbach, who is in Geneva this week representing the new Global Outreach of the Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life pro-life group, talked with LifeNews.com.
"United Nations documents, including the Rights of the Child, have directly stated support for the unborn child’s right to life," he commented. “It is critical for the world audience to see and hear these documents and give them the weight and importance that they deserve."
Some 193 nations have ratified the Rights of the Child since 1989, Fischbach noted, but he complained that most of them have some form of legalized abortion.
"The World Health Organization has estimated that more than 42 million abortions are performed worldwide each year," he notes. "MCCL GO believes that abortion is the greatest human rights struggle of our time and will be making that case in Geneva, Switzerland, this week."
To celebrate the Convention, MCCL has released a new document, “Celebrating the Rights of the Child," defending the rights of unborn children worldwide.
The document quotes from four major U.N. declarations on child rights, dating back to 1924. In each case, the rights of the child to life and protection are strongly affirmed by the international community.
“As delegates and child’s rights advocates gather in Geneva to celebrate the progress that has been made, MCCL GO is here to remind them of the clear precedent set to defend the rights of every child—born and unborn,” Fischbach said.
“MCCL GO is urging U.N. delegates to protect the rights of unborn children and to reject abortion as a gross violation of the child’s right to life," he added.
Fischbach is joined by Patrick Buckley, U.N. Consultant for Britain’s Society for the Protection of Unborn Children.
“The world has already recognized that human rights begin in the womb,” Buckley said. “The 1989 Convention’s specific declaration of the rights of unborn children provides a solid foundation for our efforts to defend their lives."
