The VOTE FOR LIFE Campaign will be launched on Saturday 23rd May when leaflets will be handed out on the streets of Belfast. In the run up to the election, thousands of leaflets will be distributed by members of Precious Life across Northern Ireland. The pro-life group wants voters to ask candidates to promise to speak out and defend the right to life of unborn children. The leaflet also contains a "Guide to Candidates' Views on Abortion", listing which are pro-life or pro-abortion.
The leaflets call on the electorate to "make your vote count for unborn children". Director of Precious Life, Bernadette Smyth said "We acknowledge that abortion is not the only issue facing the voter, but it should be the social concern of every citizen to give equal protection by law to all members of society - born and unborn. Every person possesses the same basic rights and foremost amongst them is the right to life itself - for on that, all other rights depend." She added "There is a concerted campaign to legalise abortion-on-demand in all member-states of the European Union (EU). The most recent attempt was in January 2009, when the European Parliament voted on the “Catania Report” - a resolution to make abortion a ‘right’ in every EU member-state. The politicians we elect to the European Parliament in June must defend the pro-life ethos of Northern Ireland and speak up for the rights of unborn children." Bernadette Smyth concluded "Before casting their vote, we want the public to ask the candidates to promise to defend the right to life of our unborn children. If they cannot make this promises then they cannot be considered suitable candidates for political office, no matter how appealing their other policies may be. If a candidate cannot respect the life of a little baby, how can we trust them to respect our life?" |
