Will 2009 be the next 1973?
I have no recollection of that fateful day in 1973 when the U.S. Supreme Court, through a tragic judicial fiat, established abortion on demand as the law of the land. Growing up in the post-Roe era, I can only imagine the dread felt by those valiant defenders of human life when the High Court officially denied legal protection to unborn children.
That one court decision brought about the deaths of some 50 million unborn children. It gave rise to a generation of women who had to live with the unthinkable grief and emotional pain of losing a child to death—a death which could have been prevented. It placed men, who are natural defenders of life, in the position of cooperating in the killing of their own offspring.
With the election of Barack Obama, we face a reprise of 1973. That’s because the President-elect has said that his first order of business as Commander-in-Chief would be the Freedom of Choice Act, legislation that goes beyond Roe in its radicalism.
The Freedom of Choice Act is designed to wipe out virtually all protective laws with respect to abortion.
In my home state of Pennsylvania, that could mean the nullification of the landmark Abortion Control Act, which provides for parental consent, informed consent, and a 24-hour waiting period for abortion. When the Abortion Control Act went into effect in Pennsylvania, the abortion rate dropped dramatically. Therefore, it stands to reason that, if the Freedom of Choice Act is enacted, abortion totals would rise in Pennsylvania and across the U.S.
Under the Freedom of Choice Act, taxpayer-funded abortions could have free rein. Research has shown that, when taxpayers are footing the bill, abortion levels rise. Equally disturbing, the legislation could make the heinous practice of partial-birth abortion legal again—a practice that is opposed by 70 percent of the American people, according to public opinion polls.
When the Supreme Court upheld the federal ban on partial-birth abortion, Senator Obama stated, “I am extremely concerned that (Gonzales v. Carhart) will embolden state legislatures to enact further measures to restrict a woman’s right to choose, and that the conservative Supreme Court justices will look for other opportunities to erode Roe v. Wade.”
Even if President-elect Obama does not get his way with the Freedom of Choice Act, he appears determined to appoint Supreme Court Justices who would consider Roe sacrosanct. The danger is that Roe could survive for generations to come, even as more generations of children are killed by abortion.
As pro-life activists, our work will become more vital than ever during an Obama Administration. We will have to strive doubly hard to prevent the erosion of the legislative and cultural gains made over the past 35 years. The unexpected fruit of the Obama years could be a pro-life movement that is stronger and more determined than ever to right the wrongs of pro-abortion policy.
True hope comes from a dedication to life in all its stages, a willingness to care for those who are unable to care for themselves. Let’s make a pledge that, no matter the threats to human life that emerge next year, we will do everything possible to make our nation’s 2009 better than its 1973.

Barack Obama Pushes Abortion on Day One With Rahm Emanuel as Chief of Staff
Barack Obama didn't wait 24 hours before making his first decision to promote abortion as the President-elect. Obama has offered the White House chief of staff position to pro-abortion Rep. Rahm Emanuel of Illinois, who has a 0 percent pro-life voting record.
Emanuel has reportedly officially accepted the position.
During the presidential election, pro-life organizations strongly opposed Obama because he supports unlimited abortions any time in pregnancy, backed taxpayer funding of abortion and opposes any limits.
In Emanuel, Obama has chosen a clone of himself, according to voting records from the National Right to Life Committee.
In July 2007, Emuanel voted against an attempt to stop taxpayer-funding of the Planned Parenthood abortion business that brings in over $1 billion annually by doing 25 percent of the abortions in the United States.
As a Congressman, Emanuel has voted against upholding state parental involvement laws allowing parents to know when their daughter is considering an abortion. He voted for making Americans pay for abortions at U.S. military base hospitals, and voted for funding a United Nations agency involved in the forced-abortion one-child family planning policy in China.
Emanuel also repeatedly voted against the ban on partial-birth abortions and opposed the bill to protect pregnant women and their unborn children, like Laci and Conner Peterson, from violence.
The White House chief of staff is a key policy position with an advisory role that often equals or surpasses that of the vice president and offering the position to Emanuel confirms Obama will promote abortion as president.
Giving the nod to Emanuel also appears to undermine Obama's mantra of change as the congressman worked on President Clinton's first presidential campaign and later served as an advisor to the former pro-abortion president in the White House.
In the House, where he is the fourth-highest member of the Democratic Party leadership, Emanuel also voted to force Americans to pay for embryonic stem cell research and voted for a measure that would have allowed human cloning.

New President - Most Pro-Abortion in Nation’s History
Voters have made this election a first for America by electing the most pro-abortion president in the history of our nation. Senator Barack Obama will assume the power of the presidency, defined as the most powerful position in the world.
During his political career, Barack Obama has consistently voted against innocent preborn children. He has repeatedly voted to deny basic medical care to babies who survive late-term abortions, and voted against efforts to end the gruesome partial-birth abortion procedure. As a candidate for president, Senator Obama had pledged to sign the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) which would override any and all restrictions on abortion throughout nine months of pregnancy. It would also force taxpayers to fund abortion-on-demand.
Of equal concern is Senator Obama’s pledge to appoint only judges who support Roe v. Wade, which could effectively impose the death penalty on future generations of America’s innocent unborn children.
In addition, pro-abortion Democrats retained control of the US Senate and House of Representatives. Undoubtedly, American citizens can expect a radical pro-abortion agenda from its newly elected leaders.
Bradley Mattes, Executive Director of Life Issues Institute, said, “With federal legislation no longer an option for a minimum of two years, pro-life education is absolutely central and critical to our future efforts of ending abortion. The key to countering this devastating political loss is to change the hearts and minds of Americans on abortion and related life issues. That can only be done through effective pro-life education.”
Mr. Mattes added, “Pro-life education is the foundation on which we must build future political and legislative victories to protect unborn babies. We will not give up and we will not waiver in our resolve and determination to end this modern-day holocaust of abortion.”
