21 / 10 / 2008 - Northern Ireland Pro-life Petition presented to PM at Downing Street
The director of Precious Life was joined by representatives of the other Northern Ireland pro-life groups to make a presentation of 120,000 petitions to the Prime Minister. The presentation was on Tuesday 21 October at 10 Downing Street at 1.00pm. Bernadette Smyth handed over 120,000 petitions signed by people in Northern Ireland opposing the extension of the 1967 Abortion Act to Northern Ireland.
Bernadette Smyth also went to the Houses to Parliament to deliver to all MPs, a DVD of the “Rally for Life” which was held in Belfast on Saturday 18 October.
Thousands of pro-life supporters attended the Rally at Stormont in Belfast to show their opposition to the extension of the 1967 Abortion Act to Northern Ireland. Undaunted by the heavy rain, the enthusiastic crowd cheered as their local MPs and Assembly Members, together with representatives of local, national and international pro-life groups pledged to stop abortion being forced on Northern Ireland.
Bernadette Smyth, who organised the rally, said "I was overwhelmed to see so many people standing in defence of our unborn children. Thousands of people from the different traditions in Northern Ireland stood united at this historic 'Rally for Life' to hear our local politicians reiterate the cross-party opposition to the extension of the Abortion Act."
She added, "Tomorrow (Wednesday 22 October) - exactly one year after the Northern Ireland Assembly voted against abortion - Westminster MPs could vote to force abortion on Northern Ireland."
"These ‘Rally for Life’ DVDs which MPS receive today have a clear message from the people of Northern Ireland that we do not want the 1967 Abortion Act imposed on us from Westminster."
The DVDs, together with the petitions presented to Gordon Brown, will ensure that Westminster cannot ignore the fact that there is no will from the vast majority of people in Northern Ireland to extend the 1967 Abortion Act to this part of the United Kingdom."
Bernadette Smyth concluded "Precious Life call on all Westminster MPs to acknowledge the clear pro-life message being sent out from the politicians, the churches, and the people in Northern Ireland. We urge all MPs in Westminster to vote against the amendment to extend the 1967 Abortion Act to Northern Ireland. We appeal to all MPs in Westminster to respect the democratic process in Northern Ireland and leave any legislation on abortion to be dealt with by our Assembly."
