The packed conference hall in the Europa Hotel heard the testimony of guest speaker Denise Mountenay – co-founder of 'Women for Life International'
This was the first in a series of public meetings to raise awareness of the serious threat of abortion being forced on Northern Ireland from Westminster. A group of MPs in Westminster who have put forward a proposal to extend the 1967 Abortion Act to the province, despite strong opposition from the people, politicians, and churches. Precious Life had the great privilege of hosting Denise Mountenay's first visit to Northern Ireland. Denise, who had three abortions, spoke about the devastating pain and suffering that abortion causes to women. Also at the meeting, plans were announced for the ‘Rally for Life’ taking place at Stormont in Belfast, on Saturday 18th October. Denise Mountenay said Northern Ireland was a pro-life beacon to the rest of the world and encouraged everyone to get active in promoting the Rally for Life. She said the Rally was vitally important in giving the people of Northern Ireland an opportunity to send out a clear message to Westminster that they will never accept the extension of the 1967 Abortion Act. Speaking to the assembled media before the meeting, director of Precious Life Bernadette Smyth said there was no need for any change in the law. "We value life here - the rest of the UK needs to look to Northern Ireland to see how women in crisis pregnancies are supported and helped. The law in the rest of the UK should change to come in line with Northern Ireland to ensure that all unborn children are protected" she said. The meeting in the Europa Hotel served as a timely warning - from a woman who has first hand experience of the devastating effects of abortion - for the people of Northern Ireland to stand up and speak out NOW to defend the right to life of our unborn children. |
