23 / 07 / 2008 - SDLP WILL OPPOSE EXTENSION OF BRITISH ABORTION ACT TO NORTHERN IRELAND
SDLP Leader and Foyle MP Mark Durkan MLA has said he will oppose moves to extend the 1967 Abortion Act to Northern Ireland.

Speaking after an amendment to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill proposing its extension was tabled at Westminster Mr Durkan said the SDLP’s stance will be taken with a full democratic conscience.

He said: “The SDLP has been consistent in our total opposition to abortion and in particular to the proposed extension of the British 1967 Act to Northern Ireland.

“Before the previous hearing of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill, I wrote all Westminster MPs stating this case.

“I had feared that these amendments proposing such an extension would have been tabled at an earlier stage but it comes as no surprise that it has happened now.

“The SDLP with full democratic conscience will do everything we can to oppose these plans and will do so on behalf of the people who have elected us and on behalf of those human beings who can be saved if we can effectively curb and hold back the extension of this Act.

“In doing so we will be seeking to maintain and preserve the fundamental integrity of humanity which goes to the heart of human values and the protection of life

“Furthermore, this issue once again highlights why it is important that the devolution of justice and policing powers take place as soon as possible.

“Then we can ensure that important decisions such as these remain within the control of the Assembly.

“I would hope all those politicians who voice their opposition to the extension of the Abortion Act to Northern Ireland will be present in the chamber when it comes up for debate later this year.”
