The amendments, tabled by Lib Dem MP Evan Harris and Labour MPs Chris McCafferty and Frank Dobson, are for changes to the 1967 Abortion Act. If passed, the amendments will : • allow abortions for any reason if carried out "in accordance with the conditions and principles of good medical practice"; • remove the requirement of two doctors to approve an abortion; • and allow abortions to be performed by non-doctors - specifically targeting nurses and midwifes to become abortionists. The current law states that abortions can only be performed by registered "medical practitioners". The amendments will allow any "health care practitioners" to perform abortions. Many "health care practitioners" may have a PhD and therefore use the title 'Dr', but they are not medically qualified in the same way as a hospital doctor or general practitioner. The "Committee Stage" of the HFE Bill debate has been brought to a conclusion. More pro-abortion amendments are expected at the Bill's "Report Stage" in early July. |
