29 / 04 / 2008 - Precious Life thank people of Derry for support

Precious Life accompanied the Assembly member for Foyle, Pat Ramsey as he presented 15,000 pro-life petition from his constituents to the Secretary of State. The petitions, in the forms of postcards, are part of Precious Life's current campaign to oppose the controversial Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill (HFE) Bill.

Speaking outside the Northern Ireland Office at Stormont, the Director of Precious Life, Bernadette Smyth thanked Mr Ramsey and his constituents for supporting their campaign. Pat Ramsey, the SDLP Foyle MLA, has also called on politicians to oppose attempts to extend the Abortion Act to Northern Ireland through the forthcoming HFE Bill at Westminster.

Bernadette Smyth said "We launched this Postcard Petition in response to the threat of pro-abortion MPs using the HFE Bill to change the law on abortion and force it on Northern Ireland. The petition calls on the Secretary of State to ensure Westminster respects the pro-life ethos of Northern Ireland and that the law regarding abortion here will be dealt with by our local Assembly only."

"Since January, we have been collecting petition signatures from all across Northern Ireland. We've had a tremendous response to the campaign and the response in the Foyle constituency has been particularly outstanding. Our volunteers in Derry have been working flat-out to collect these 15,000 signatures and it shows the strength of feeling there is in the city against abortion."

She added "The Westminster debate on the HFE Bill will probably be May 12, and could continue until July. Precious Life will now intensify this campaign in the run-up to, and throughout, the debate."

Bernadette Smyth concluded "I sincerely thank all Precious Life's volunteers in Derry for their commitment and dedication; Pat Ramsey for his continued support; and all his constituents who signed the postcard petition. Derry should be proud to call itself a truly 'pro-life city'. "
