The government of the Irish Republic announced on Tuesday that legislation will be brought forward to “clarify” under what circumstances abortion is allowed under Irish law. Director of Precious Life, Bernadette Smyth said, “There is no need to ‘clarify’ the law on abortion in Ireland. The intentional killing of unborn children is always wrong. Abortion is a criminal offence. Killing a child in the womb is NEVER legal under ANY circumstances in Ireland." “The Government is ignoring the wishes of the vast majority of Irish people who want our unborn children to remain protected." "The law against abortion and child destruction is basically the same in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The core purpose of these laws is for the protection of the unborn child. This, however, does not stop doctors from providing all genuine life-saving treatment that a pregnant mother may require, even in rare cases where the unborn child - after all efforts are made to save his/her life - unintentionally dies." Without abortion - Ireland has the best ratings for maternal mortality and morbidity in the world.” In response to the Government announcement, the four Catholic archbishops of Ireland issued a statement encouraging “all to pray that our public representatives will be given the wisdom and courage to do what is right.”
Mrs Smyth added, “We welcome the statement from the four Archbishops of Ireland. As they so rightly stated, the lives of untold numbers of unborn children now depend on the choices that will be made by our public representatives. And the decisions made by our public representatives will depend on the prayers and sacrifices people of Ireland.” “Precious Life have now written to all the Bishops in Ireland asking them to support our latest initiative to protect Ireland - north and south - from the scourge of abortion. Our 40 Days of Prayer and Fasting will be launched on Tuesday 1st January 2013. 40 Days of Prayer and Fasting Bernadette Smyth concluded, “Ireland is facing one of its darkest hours - with the opening of aMarie Stopes International abortion centre in Northern Ireland, and now this decision of the Irish government to legislate for abortion in the Republic of Ireland. Precious Life’s 40 Days of Prayer and Fasting is the massive 'revolution' of prayer and sacrifice that Ireland now so urgently needs.”
