12 / 04 / 2012 - Precious Life calls on Sinn Fein to oppose Abortion Bill in Irish Parliament

Northern Ireland’s leading pro-life group, Precious Life is calling on Sinn Féin to oppose a Bill coming before Dáil Éireann (Irish Parliament) that will legalise abortion-on-demand in Ireland.

The so-called “Medical Treatment Bill”, tabled by Socialist Party TD Clare Daly, is the first ever Private Members’ Bill backing abortion to be introduced in the Dáil. The Bill comes before the Dáil next week on Thursday 19th April.

Precious Life were in Dublin today (Thursday 12th April) to join a demonstration outside the Dáil calling on Irish politicians to oppose the Bill.

Director of Precious Life Bernadette Smyth said, "If this Bill is passed, then abortion is legalised in Ireland. Political and constitutional differences will be irrelevant. Dublin is less than a two-hour drive from Belfast."

She added, "This Bill is even worse than the 1967 Abortion Act, which kills over 600 babies in Britain every day. The “Medical Treatment Bill” will allow abortion right up to birth; deny 'conscientious objection' to abortion for pro-life health professionals; create a ‘witch-hunt’ against pro-life doctors, who will be forced to refer women seeking abortion to a pro-abortion doctor; allow doctors to perform an abortion even without the woman’s consent; allow abortions on underage girls without their parent’s or guardian’s consent; criminalise pro-life groups who offer women alternatives to abortion."

"By using the misleading name - 'Medical Treatment Bill' - Clare Daly is attempting to hoodwink the public. Abortion is not medical treatment. Women in Ireland receive all genuine medical treatment they may need during pregnancy. Without abortion, Ireland is the safest place in the world to have a baby."

"We urge people in the Republic of Ireland to lobby their TDs and Senators in the week ahead and ask them to oppose this Bill. It is also vital that people in Northern Ireland contact Sinn Féin, as the only all-Ireland party, and urge them to oppose the Bill."

Bernadette Smyth concluded, "On Easter Sunday, across the island of Ireland, Sinn Féin paraded with, and quoted from, the 1916 Easter Proclamation. They said they want an Irish Republic based on the Proclamation. They said their republican vision is reinforced by their obligation to the children of future generations."

"Sinn Féin must be reminded that the Proclamation calls on Irishmen and Irishwomen to cherish ALL the children of the nation equally. This includes children in their mothers' wombs. Our obligation to the children of future generations is to ensure they are not killed by abortion."

"We call on Sinn Féin, in the name of God, to cherish the unborn children of the nation equally and oppose this Abortion Bill in the Irish Parliament."
