11 / 04 / 2012 - ACTION ALERT - Oppose abortion Bill before Irish Parliament

Dear Friends,

Precious Life is warning the people of Ireland that a Bill coming before Dáil Éireann (Irish Parliament) will effectively legalise abortion-on-demand in Ireland. The so-called "Medical Treatment Bill", tabled by Socialist Party TD Clare Daly and several of her pro-abortion colleagues, is the first ever Private Members’ Bill backing abortion to be introduced in the Dáil.

By using the misleading name - "Medical Treatment Bill" - Clare Daly is attempting to hoodwink the public that her Bill isn't actually about legalising abortion.

Abortion is not medical treatment. Women in Ireland are not denied genuine medical treatments during pregnancy. The Bill is similar to guidelines issued by the Department of Health in Northern Ireland. Precious Life’s NOT IN MY NAME Campaign exposed those guidelines as an attempt to legalise abortion in Northern Ireland ‘through the back door’ by misinterpreting the law. We held a conference at Stormont and produced a leaflet outlining why there is No Medical Necessity for Abortion.

Clare Daly’s Bill is even worse than the British 1967 Abortion Act, which kills over 600 babies every day. Her "Medical Treatment Bill" will:

-- allow abortion right up to birth
-- allow abortion in cases where a woman claims she is suicidal, even without any diagnosis from a psychiatrist or psychologist
-- denies ‘conscientious objection’ to abortion for pro-life health professionals
-- create a ‘witch-hunt’ against pro-life doctors, who will be forced to refer women seeking abortion to a pro-abortion doctor
-- allows doctors to perform an abortion even without the woman’s consent
-- allows abortions on underage girls without their parent’s or guardian’s consent
-- target pro-life groups or individuals by making it an offence to talk to women or give them information; or hold Prayer Vigils or demonstrations outside abortion centres. Any pro-lifer convicted will be imprisoned for up to a year and fined up to £2000

I’ve spoke to Johanna Higgins of the Association of Catholic Lawyers of Ireland and she warns that the Bill is set to be a strikingly totalitarian law that will repeal the criminal law prohibiting abortion. She said, "Its seeks to indicate that what has hitherto been a serious criminal offence in Ireland should now be seen as life-giving treatment. Given the wide-reaching provisions in the Bill, this would make the criminal law against abortion in the Republic a dead letter. This is a bold move, as even the Abortion Act in Britain only presents a defence to the criminal law, where as Clare Daly seeks to obliterate the criminal legislation."

1.
First, I strongly urge you to unite with us in praying and fasting against this Bill.

The Bill comes before the Dáil Éireann on Thursday 19th April. Precious Life has organised 3 Days of Prayer and Fasting on Tuesday 17th April, Wednesday 18th April, and Thursday 19th April. We urge you to offer up your prayers and sacrifices that this evil Bill will fail.

2.
Secondly, I urge all pro-lifers in Ireland to join a demonstration outside Dáil Éireann at 12noon tomorrow (Thursday 12th April). This demonstration will give the people of Ireland an opportunity to send out the clear message to politicians that we will never accept the killing of our unborn children, and that this Bill to legalise abortion has been introduced "Not in My Name"

For details of travel arrangements from Northern Ireland to the Dáil, please contact Precious Life on 02890278484

3.
Thirdly, I urge you to lobby the politicians and ask them to oppose this Bill.

In the Republic of Ireland contact TDs and Senators. Click here for a list of TDs TDs and Senators

People in Northern Ireland should contact Sinn Fein (as the only all-Ireland party) and urge them to oppose the Bill. Remind Sinn Fein that they say in their Party Policy they are opposed to abortion and that Gerry Adams in 2008 co-signed a letter opposing the extension of the 1967 Abortion Act to Northern Ireland.

If you are unable to attend the demonstration tomorrow, please take part in the 3 Days of Prayer and fasting and the lobbying of the politicians.

Yours in Christ,

Bernadette Smyth
DIRECTOR
