Smith told the crowd of pilgrims gathered on the National Mall that members of “the greatest human rights movement on earth” should work to change both the Democrat-controlled Senate and the White House to end the obstruction to pro-life legislation and the weakening of conscience protections that the Obama administration has presided over.
“The weakening and systematic undermining of conscience protections are at the top of Mr. Obama’s wish list,” said Smith, the co-chair of the Congressional Pro-Life Caucus and a leader on Capitol Hill against abortion. Rep. Chris Smith The congressman condemned a laundry list of abortion advancements under the Obama administration, including having “coerced virtually all health insurers” to pay for all birth control, including abortifacient birth control such as Ella, a sister drug to RU-486, and for denying a longstanding federal grant to the U.S. Catholic bishops for their anti-trafficking working because of the bishops’ objection to abortion. This record, he said, “is a mere foretaste—a mere foreshadowing—of what will be if he is reelected,” pointing to the damage that would be inflicted on the pro-life movement with more pro-abortion judicial appointments and more time for Obama to wield “the coercive power of the state to compel abortion conformity and complicity.” “Tomorrow night President Obama will issue a call to ‘return to American values’ in his state of the union address. I remind him: Mr. President, the violent destruction of children in the womb—killing babies—is not an American value,” said Smith. “The 2008 election gave America the ‘Abortion President.’ The 2010 election gave America the most pro-life House of Representatives ever. The 2012 election is the most important watershed election ever,” Smith concluded. “No one who values life can sit this one out.” In a video interview [see below] with LifeSiteNews.com, renowned pro-life veteran Joe Scheidler praised the “tenor” of the crowd. “It’s a rainy miserable day, and yet it hasn’t bothered anybody,” Scheidler said.
“The enthusiasm; the singing; the chanting; the bands. It’s true that we’re commemorating, but there is a sort of celebration too, because of so much that’s happening.” “We’re going to defund Planned Parenthood. We’ve had over 96 bills passed in the various states in the past year. And we’re going to have a conservative president when we get rid of Obameister.” Scheidler also pointed to a change that has happened in the national discourse on abortion. “People don’t want to be called pro-abortion. It’s becoming a bad word,” he said. Source: LifeSiteNews.com |
