In the run up to the Assembly Election on 5th May, thousands of leaflets are being distributed by members of Precious Life across Northern Ireland, urging voters to ask candidates to promise to oppose abortion and defend the right to life of unborn children. The leaflet also directs voters to the group’s website which will ‘name and shame’ pro-abortion candidates. Director of Precious Life, Bernadette Smyth said, "We are calling on the electorate to ‘make your vote count for unborn children’. We acknowledge that abortion is not the only issue facing the voter, but foremost amongst all other issues is the right to life - for on that, all other rights depend." She added, "On our website we will ‘name and shame’ any political party or candidate who will not protect the rights of the unborn child. We will blitz the whole of Northern Ireland with our new Campaign Leaflet urging the public to vote only for candidates who will oppose abortion. Quoting from the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, we are telling voters to ask the candidates – ‘Will you protect the rights of a child BEFORE birth?’ " Bernadette Smyth concluded "If a candidate cannot make the promise to protect the rights of unborn children then he/she cannot be considered suitable for political office, no matter how appealing their other policies may be. If a candidate cannot respect the life of a little baby, how can you trust them to respect your life? Vote only for candidates who will protect unborn babies and their mothers from abortion."
